Everyone has someone they look up to - a person they go to for advice, an individual you admire or idolize. It could be your partner, a family member, coworker, or someone famous. Who are they and what makes them awesome in your eyes? #HAWMC
I admire each person in my life and am in awe of their magnificence. Each friend and family member inspires me, teaches me and offers me new awareness and insight that helps expand me as a person who is open to learning and growth. My mother inspires me with the passionate and committed way she approaches her life and my father inspired me with his humility, grace and self-discipline. In answering this WEGO Health Activist Writer's Challenge question, however, I have to respond that it is definitely my clients who are most awesome in my eyes. They are my true idols - the ones who push me to be my highest self simply by watching their commitment to health and well being - no matter what.
I have witnessed people coming to me completely locked up in feelings/experiences of fear, trauma, abuse, self-loathing, worthlessness and anxiety. They are so deeply saddened and in pain from the outcome of their lives, yet some part of them believes in a vision of freedom and happiness, and so they step out into the unknown and land on my doorstep. They are my children, and each time I enter with them into a journey of self-discovery, release and rebirth, I am in awe of how much they are willing to trust and let go to have the life they desire.
When I look at all the freedom and opportunities I have had, and then watch a woman, brought up in a community where even using a computer, driving a car or going swimming is looked down upon, decide to go to college, start a business and travel on her own, there is no question I am in the presence of greatness. When I see another leave an unhealthy marriage, move to another country, immerse herself in learning on all levels and create a dynamic and joyful life, I am inspired to walk through my own fears and hesitations. And when I get to watch a young man leave the comfort of a family business because he wants more for himself - and to be inspired - I cannot settle for mediocrity in my own life.
When a client who is terrified of food is willing to sit down and eat a meal with me, and wants so to believe that healing and health are possible, I am moved to tears. To be trusted with someone's desire and willingness in the face of fear is a gift I cannot possibly put into words, as it speaks deeply to my soul. When someone trusts me to hold their trauma, and they share their story with me, I am sure it is they, and not me who is the leader in the room.
One of the things I love about social media, and the posts that draw me in the most, are from friends, and often people I have never even met who live life passionately regardless of their immediate circumstances. Ironically, that is the focus of the WEGO Health Awards; people who have built and created greatness in spite of and maybe because of an obstacle put in their path. When someone is committed to living life large, and the commitment shines through even the pain, fear or sadness, it moves me beyond. That is what I get to experience with each new person who walks through my door for therapy. As much as I try to give them the tools to be free, they give me the biggest gifts of all - passion, purpose, perspective and persistence, and for that, I am so very grateful. They are my heroes~
